What is McTimoney Manipulation?

McTimoney is a chiropractic technique used to treat pain and dysfunction of the musculoskeletal system.

The term McTimoney is derived from its creator, John McTimoney who developed the technique in the 1950s for the treatment of humans. He then went on to adapt the technique for the treatment of animals.

Taught only at the McTimoney College of Chiropractic in Oxford, it is renowned for being a precise, whole body treatment. It is a holistic, non-invasive treatment which aims to realign and balance the musculoskeletal system, restoring health, soundness and performance.

McTimoney focuses on treating and eliminating the cause of the pain and imbalance, not just the symptoms. The gentle nature of the McTimoney method is often readily received, accepted and enjoyed by most animals.

How does the McTimoney Treatment work?

The treatment consists of gentle accurate adjustments to the misaligned vertebrae or joint. It is safe and effective using speed rather than force to release muscle tension, creating a temporary reflex release in the surrounding muscles which encourage joints to move back into anatomical alignment.  This improves joint range of movement and neurological function, restoring musculoskeletal health and equilibrium to the body.

The Treatment Process.

In accordance with the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966, it states vets are the primary care givers to animals therefore veterinary consent is required prior to treatment. Direct contact will be made to obtain permission for treatment.

When necessary and with your permission, your animals clinical history will also be requested from your veterinary surgeon prior to appointment.

- Case History:

A detailed history of your animals health will be taken, ascertaining any previous conditions or injuries which may have relevance to your animal’s current health complaint. Details of your animal’s daily exercise regime and routine will also be taken, as this can give insight into possible causes of problems and help aid in the prevention of problems reoccurring.

- Physical Examination:

A physical examination will be carried out in order to determine if the animal has any musculoskeletal asymmetry or muscle atrophy. The animal is examined for any areas of tension, heat or swellings indicative of injury as well as assessing hoof, shoe or claw wear which can indicate adaptation and imbalance in the animal’s gait.

- Gait Assessment:

The animal will be assessed in walk and trot, in-hand. Horses will be asked to turn on a circle to the left and right and observed moving backwards. Occasionally it may be necessary to see the horse on the lunge or under saddle to enable a clearer assessment of the complaint. The gait evaluation reveals any lameness, abnormal movement, weaknesses or differences in flight patterns and placements of the limbs which can indicate underlying problems or compensatory changes to the movement. If an animal presents unsound they will be referred back to the Veterinary Surgeon.

- Palpation and Adjustment:

An assessment and palpation of the animal’s musculoskeletal system will then be carried out, focusing on the spine, pelvis and other relevant joints. Feeling for skeletal misalignments, muscle spasms and asymmetry. Misalignments will be treated using a series of light, quick adjustments which release muscle spasm allowing the joint to return to its optimal range of movement.

- Massage:

The McTimoney treatment is followed by soft tissue massage which complements the treatment by releasing muscle spasms and tension which can be associated with skeletal misalignments. The use of massage also increases joint range of movement, improves circulation, releases toxin build-up and enhances performance and gait quality.

- Aftercare:

Healing is a process and can continue for a few days post treatment, therefore I advise horses have a few days off work and dog owners need to restrict strenuous exercise. Detailed aftercare advice, tailored specifically for your animal will be given to help encourage the healing process and optimise the effectiveness of the treatment.
